In my Boundaries installation, which was commissioned by the Jerome Foundation for Intermedia Arts, a current land dispute between a local city government and private citizens functioned as metonymy for other boundary issues. Framed text on the walls outlined the conflict chronologically. Small scale models visually articulated structures that separate, define or bridge public and private space. Viewers were invited to design a border that would mediate the conflict over a tiny strip of land only seven-and-a-half feet wide that abuts a public park. From these viewer suggestions I created new models during the exhibit. Museumgoers participated in the democratic process by voting for the model that they wanted to see constructed on the property.
